Stronger than the flame.
Our acquaintance began online. I saw a photo of a cheerful girl sitting on a Russian stove — it was a post about a stove that had attempted to take this family’s life three times, and the last time it was almost successful. I wrote to the girl, and she somehow responded right away and invited me to visit. Laura’s house turned out to be right in the forest of the Oryol Polesie, in the village of «Kosy, ” which has a population of 8 people. The village consists of 3 houses, one of which is Laura’s house. No civilization: there’s no water, no internet — nothing that we city dwellers can’t do without. And how did she end up in this place, in an old five‑walled house with a killer stove? A once‑successful family that ran a tourism business got in the way of envious neighbors, and they decided to set their house on fire. Right after the fire, Laura and Vit’s family was greatly helped by those very caring people, whom, as people mistakenly believe, are now very few in number. For the first three months, someone came every day, bringing new gifts and helping to get settled.
Two years later, Laura writes in her blog: «Our life has become better. We are very grateful to the fire.» Now Laura is raising two daughters — Alice and Vitta — and managing the household: she has 16 goats, about fifty chickens, three dogs, and a dozen cats. Her husband, Vit, is engaged in industrial mountaineering and is her main support and love. They still have many guests visiting them, and I was lucky enough to be one of them.
The project is in progress.
